Why applying Soap to
face is not recommended?
Using a cleanser to remove dirt
on face is considered to be a better alternative to bar soap because of the
following reasons:
- Soap has a high pH (in the area of 9
to 10), and the skin's surface pH is on average 4.7. This means that
soap can change the balance present in the skin to favor the overgrowth of
some types of bacteria, increasing acne.
- Using
soap on the face can remove natural oils from the skin that form a
barrier against water loss. This causes the sebaceous glands to
subsequently overproduce oil (sebum), which will lead to clogged pores.
It is mentioned that
Balancing Cleanser removes excess sebum. By the way what is Sebum?
The sebaceous glands are microscopic
glands in the skin that secrete an oily/waxy matter, called sebum. Sebum lubricates and waterproofs the skin
and hair of mammals. In humans, they are found in greatest abundance on the
face and scalp, though they are distributed throughout all skin sites except
the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. The sebaceous glands deposit
sebum on the hairs, and bring it to the skin surface along the hair shaft. Sebum
keeps hair and skin supple.
